York

When we arrived in York, mom went to the Evensong service at the
Yorkminster and I walked part of the wall. We stayed at the Airden House,
just a short walk to the entrance to High Petergate, leading straight to the
Yorkminster, which is a very dominate feature.

After supper we wandered around and came across the ruins of St.
 Leonard's Hospital
(below)--it's amazing, and wonderful, that they value
history enough to keep these and the grounds intact, considering how
crowded everything is. When you're on the walls you also see there are a
number of buildings with huge yards, and yet again, there is so much that
 is crowded in other areas.

We spent most of our time in York within the city walls, where there are a number
of old churches... all very beautiful inside and out.

Then we came upon The Shambles, which is a very good name for this
street--and pictures don't do it justice, as you feel the buildings are going to
topple over on you. The streets have ruts in them for the blood that used to
flow from the butcher shops, but these days they only contain water. There
are clothing, toy, candy, and just about any other type of store of possible
interest to tourists along this street. It was sunny every day we were in
London, but is raining on us here.

Mom and I walked part of the wall together; below left is part of the wall
  and one set of stairs
leading up to the top of the wall. The views looking in
from the wall (one below right) are the best and I kept taking pictures of The
  Yorkminster, but there are so
many obstacles, not much of the cathedral is
  visible.

Saturday evening we went to the
 Evensong
service. This evening there is
organ music, which mom said they didn't
have the previous evening. As we sat in
the box pews and listen to the music and
singing, I think how special this service is
--I'm glad they have this for the public.

Prior to the service we had wander-
ed around inside the Yorkminster--it is
 totally awe inspiring! And breathtaking!

Everywhere you look there is detail and
color. These photos capture some of the
detail, but they do a bad job of capturing
the colors in the stained glass unless you
take a photo of one window at a time.
It's so massive and there are arches upon
 arches upon arches.

This is a great finale to our trip!
