Rick Steves London Tour - Day 5

Thursday morning we took the train out to Windsor Castle
to tour the Royal family's castle and grounds. This is the place
Queen Elizabeth II considers home... it's a mere eight blocks in
size! The quaint town of Windsor has grown up around the castle.
We took an audio-tour of the Castle and grounds, saw the large
doll house with its incredible detail that was given to Queen Mary,
and the four-foot, life-size dolls with clothes that were gifts to
Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. We also toured the
impressive public rooms of the Castle, and the King's Chapel
where King Henry VIII is buried next to his third wife, Jane
Seymour - who gave him his only son.

While touring the castle, I asked a guard if she had met
the Queen. She stated that she had not, because she had not
been there through the holidays yet. She was looking forward
to meeting the Queen at Christmas when she gives everyone
their presents... a Christmas pudding and something else.

The grounds were beautiful--either gardens or well manicured
lawns, even the steep slopes. And there were surprising details
  around every corner.

Mom did some shopping and walked around the village of
 Windsor
, and I took pictures of the village and the 'front' approach to the castle. The village is very picturesque and built right up to the castle wall--the wall is visible at the end of the street in
the picture to the left. Architect Sir Christopher Wren's presence was felt everywhere in the village, as he'd designed some of the buildings and there was even a "Sir Christopher Wren's House" Hotel and Conference Center.

While hanging on the gate I took the picture of the
front of the Castle that is above and the background for this
page.

That evening several of our tour group met at a local sports
tavern for a football night (soccer to us from the U.S.). In the
picture are (from left): Joan, Stephen, Tom, Robert, Lise, Bruce,
  Denise, Sara, Tina, and me.
