Cotswolds

Tuesday morning we were sorry to be leaving Manor Farm. We needed more time
to search for our relatives. Also, Fiona and Nick were so personable and their country
home wonderful - the kind of place one could live, or at least settle down with a good
book for awhile! During breakfast we found out where we could get the Portmeirion
Pottery mom had admired, so we're adding a stop in Street at an outlet mall for some
fragile souvenirs. We picked up another suitcase to carry the teapots, bowls, and plates
mom picked up--these were to be a bit of a challenge to transport home.

Next we stopped at the Somerset Record Office to get more detailed information
on births, marriages, and deaths. We spent a good share of the afternoon there, but
didn't find anything definite. Then someone told me about getting copies of microfilm
of old newspapers for obituaries and weddings from the library--these would give the
married names of daughters and probably mention other family members, which would
be useful. However, by this time it was too late so I got the telephone number of the
 library.

The Cotswold Garden Tea Rooms B&B (our home for the next two nights) is
in the heart of Stow-On-The-Wold and we used TomTom to navigate our way through
the narrow winding streets of yet another beautiful, quaint village.

Our B&B is a sweet little restaurant and the owners live
above the shop. We climbed very steep stairs again which
divided halfway up, each way with more steep steps going to
a guest room and a bathroom. We chose the room in the back
overlooking the restaurant's patio with flowers and tables.

Then we quickly settled in and went out in search of some-
thing to eat (because the tea room was closed). We found
the Queen's Pub, a noisy place with atmosphere and good
 food.

Left is mom at the bottom of the stair and me at the top,
 holding the doorway up.

The Tearoom was a very interesting building--as well as
the very steep stairs, the doorway to our bedroom was so
short we had to duck to go through, and the ceiling sagged!
The patio in the back is surrounded on all sides by the backs
of other businesses and a church.

All of the buildings in the cities and villages are built on
top of each other, no space is wasted. Which is all the more
noticable when you visit the palaces and castles, which have
 such expansive grounds.

We got up Wednesday and our host gave us breakfast in the tea
room while his wife and mother-in-law were in the kitchen getting ready
to open for the day. This morning it's raining lightly and as we left we
saw a postman delivering mail by bicycle.

Today our main destination is Blenheim Palace, home of the
Duke of Marlborough, near the village of Woodstock. The mansion and
grounds are very impressive. Winston Churchill, whose father Lord
Randolph was the younger brother of a 7th Duke of Marlborough, was
born here and spent much of his childhood here. After we toured this
magnificent palace, we went to the country churchyard at Bladon
where Winston and Clementine Churchill are buried.

Right is mom in front of Blenheim Palace and below are the
palace and grounds as seen from the main entrance.
